What is MIPO and why should you care?

In case you don’t know, MIPO stands for Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis. Here are four reasons why it is a valuable approach in small animall orthopaedic surgery

1. Enhanced Biological Healing Environment
MIPO preserves the local blood supply and periosteal integrity by avoiding direct exposure of the fracture site. This biological advantage is crucial in small animals, where preserving soft tissue minimizes inflammation and supports faster bone healing. The technique encourages natural callus formation and maintains a more favorable healing environment compared to traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).

2. Reduced Morbidity and Complications
By limiting surgical dissection and trauma, MIPO significantly decreases the risk of infection, postoperative swelling, and delayed healing. In small animal patients—particularly cats and toy breed dogs—this translates into fewer complications, less pain, and shorter hospitalization times, all of which are critical for client satisfaction and animal welfare.

3. Improved Postoperative Function and Recovery
Minimally invasive techniques help maintain joint mobility and muscular function due to less disruption of surrounding tissues. Animals undergoing MIPO typically show earlier weight-bearing and faster return to normal activity. This is particularly important in small animal patients, where prolonged immobilization can quickly lead to muscle atrophy and joint stiffness.

4. Expanding Surgical Capabilities and Client Appeal
MIPO allows veterinary surgeons to manage complex fractures with greater precision and reduced operative time. As more owners seek advanced care for their pets, offering MIPO can enhance a clinic’s surgical profile and appeal to clients interested in cutting-edge, low-impact procedures. This aligns with the growing trend toward minimally invasive medicine across veterinary disciplines.
