What are the Red Flags which help us to identify when back pain is serious?

Whist it is reassuring to remember that serious spinal pathology is rare, it actually presents quite a challenge, as clinically we are constantly faced with making sure that we do not miss a patient with serious pathology. Red Flags have been developed to help us to identify these serious cases. Combinations of Red Flags should represent a clear reason for further investigations or onward specialist referral.

November’s Physiotherapy Club webinar is ‘Back Pain and Red Flags – What Not to Miss’ with Dr Susan Greenhalgh. In this webinar, Dr Greenhalgh will concentrate on combinations of specific warning signs for two serious spinal pathologies that should be dealt with as emergency conditions; Cauda Equina Syndrome and Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression.
