Sue Paterson qualified from Cambridge University Vet School 1984; she gained her Certificate in Small Animal Dermatology 1990, her British Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology in October 1994, and her European Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology in 1996. She is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Dermatology as a specialist in Veterinary Dermatology.
In 1997 she was the winner of the BSAVA Dunkin Award for the best paper in JSAP by a practitioner. Her first textbook "Skin diseases of the dog" was published in 1998, with "Skin diseases of the cat" following in 1999. These have sold worldwide and have been translated into many languages including German, Spanish, Chinese and Russian. She has just completed her third textbook on the management of otitis externa in the dog and cat. She lectures extensively at major national and international meetings in both the UK and Europe. Sue is a partner at the Rutland House Referral Hospital in St Helens where she has run the Dermatology referral service for 12 years. She is also the veterinary adviser to DermapetUK.
