Course outline
This modular course will introduce you to ultrasound and its applications in small animal practice. Four sessions, each one day in length, are held at monthly intervals. This provides you with essential theory and 'hands-on' supervised practical scanning at each module, together with learning tasks and suggested reading designed to develop your scanning skills before the next attendance session.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Principles of ultrasound and choosing suitable equipment
• Indications for ultrasound
• The importance of patient preparation
• General principles of ultrasound techniques
• Commonly encountered artefacts
• The normal appearance of the liver, spleen, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, adrenal glands and pancreas
• Commonly encountered conditions in these organs
• Echocardiography: basic 2-D views, M mode studies and the common acquired cardiac conditions
• Biopsy techniques and non cardiac thoracic ultrasound

At the end of the course
You will have an appreciation of the many uses of ultrasound and a firm grasp of the scanning techniques for each organ to build on in your own practice.
