This general level course is suitable for you if you work in practice and wish to develop your confidence and skills in small animal soft tissue surgery. The four 2-day attendance sessions have major emphasis on 'hands-on' wetlab practical surgery. Attending the whole course will
provide you with an excellent grounding in soft tissue surgery, together with the confidence and skills to tackle procedures safely and effectively in practice. If you prefer to develop one particular area, such as wound management or gastrointestinal surgery, you can book on to one or more individual modules in your chosen areas. You will learn key areas of theory in seminars and interactive sessions, and apply this in the extensive practical sessions with guidance and support from approachable and friendly Specialist tutors. Your new and improved diagnostic,
decision-making and surgical skills can be translated directly to your practice situation to offer a more complete soft tissue surgery service to your patients.

Module 1: Wound Management and Oncology
Date: 13th - 14th June 2008
Managing wounds as effectively as possible is a key area of small animal practice. Accurate assessment and appropriate treatment can make the difference between rapid healing and a return to normal appearance, and an ongoing non-healing wound that requires further intervention. In this module you will learn to manage open wounds and tumours more effectively, make decisions as to the best options for each patient in casebased sessions, and then practise surgical techniques in the extensive wetlab practical sessions.
Specific areas to be covered include:-
• Wound healing • Advancement flaps • Transposition flaps • Free skin grafts • Biopsy techniques • Use of drains
Module 2: Head, Neck and Thoracic Conditions
Date: 11th - 12th July 2008
Patients requiring surgical procedures of the head and neck are commonly encountered in small animal practice. During this course you will learn the theory essential for making decisions as to which procedure is appropriate for each of your patients, and you will practise the surgical
techniques under the guidance of highly experienced and approachable tutors. This course includes extensive ‘hands-on’ practical wetlab sessions.

Module 3: Gastrointestinal Surgery
Date: 12th - 13th September 2008
Gastrointestinal surgery skills are essential for all vets working with small animals. You need to have a plan before starting these procedures, and be confident that you can cope with what you find once you have performed your laparotomy. This course will enhance your decision
making and practical skills in key areas of gastrointestinal surgery and relevant supportive care.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Exploratory laparotomy • Principles of intestinal surgery • Oesophageal disease • Gastric dilatation-volvulus • Biopsy procedures • Feeding tube techniques: oesophagostomy, gastrostomy • Gastropexy techniques • Abdominocentesis • Diagnostic peritoneal lavage
Module 4: Urogenital and Perineal Surgery

diagnosis to deciding on the best treatment for each animal. You will then practise the surgical procedures in wetlab classes under the guidance of the highly experienced course tutors, before you carry out these techniques in your practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
