Course outline
Events can move on quickly for cancer cases and their owners and this session is all about being prepared. We will focus on the recognition and management of various oncological emergencies that may come to your clinic as part of the disease presentation, progression or therapeutic intervention. We will also cover safe anesthetic techniques, critical patient monitoring and pain relief as part of definitive therapy and palliative care. Finally, when life expectancy is limited, it becomes even more important to get communication right. Good, compassionate care doesn’t have to be a professional compromise. What do we understand by palliative care? How do we empower clients so that they are able to make the right decision without regrets when the time comes to say goodbye?
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Oncological emergencies
• Anaesthesia for oncology patients
• Critical care
• Analgesia
• Palliative care
• Effective and compassionate client communications
