Diagnostic cytology is extremely useful for the investigation of numerous clinical problems; for example; skin masses and lymphadenopathy, masses within body cavities, joint disease,
respiratory disease, and body cavity effusions. This practical workshop will show you how cytology can be carried out in your practice. It will highlight the common pitfalls and show which
diagnoses can be made in your practice lab, and which samples are best sent off for an expert opinion.

• Sampling techniques- good technique is vital for reliable interpretation!
• Cytology of inflammation and neoplasia
• Evaluation of body cavity effusions, synovial fluid and CSF

Module 3: Respiratory Disease

Respiratory tract diseases in dogs and cats can be as rewarding as they are daunting. It is essential that you carry out a thorough physical examination with each patient and that you are confident in interpreting your findings. The importance of obtaining diagnostic thoracic radiographs and the significance of abnormal appearances will be emphasised and illustrated with case examples. Newer techniques such as bronchoscopy and more advanced imaging will be discussed though the emphasis will be firmly on common conditions and how you can realistically manage these patients in practice.

This course is designed to build on the principles learned in Cardiology Part 1. This session will be clinically orientated to help you to relate what you have learned to the patients that you are likely to encounter in your consulting room. A practical session will allow you to interpret and discuss ECG recordings, thoracic radiographs and echocardiography studies.

On completion of both Part 1 and Part 2 you will have the knowledge and skills to deal with the following:
• Diagnosis and treatment of common arrhythmias that you will encounter in small animal practice
• Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of common congenital heart diseases in the dog and cat
• Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of common acquired heart diseases in the dog and cat
• Cardiac therapeutics; especially in the optimum management of your congestive heart failure patients
