Have you ever had to deal with one of these………
• A retching Westie that has eaten a lamb bone
• A severely dyspnoeic cat
• A collapsed dog with a vague history of GI disturbances and weakness
• A vascular pedicle that just won’t stop bleeding
• A dog with seizures that you cannot control with diazepam
• A Great Dane with suspected GDV
• A patient with a prolapsed globe, presented to you on a Friday night?
If the answer to any of these is yes, and you would like to develop the skills and confidence that you will need to handle critical situations calmly and effectively, this modular course can help you.
We will cover essential current theory and combine this with highly practical tips for both surgical procedures and clinical techniques to help you to deal with all of your emergency patients in a logical and coherent manner, with minimal stress levels. Small group teaching with limited numbers of delegates, and highly experienced and approachable tutors, will ensure that you achieve your learning objectives.
Attend the whole course, or book individual modules of your choice. Each session has a highly practical emphasis, and many include hands-on sessions with models and wetlabs, to help you to put what you have learned into practice with help from the course tutors.

Course Outline
Bleeding disorders and anaemia are common presentations in small animal practice, and logical decision making is essential to help you to reach a diagnosis and then provide the appropriate treatment. Is the anaemia regenerative or non-regenerative? When and how would you take a bone biopsy? Bleeding tendencies – how should you investigate? When do you need to use a blood transfusion, and how do you calculate the transfusion rate? What precautions do you need to take?
We will answer all these questions and more during this session. The emphasis will be on a practical approach that you can use for common problems, with plenty of case-based discussion and advice on the management of diseases that you will frequently see in general practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Investigation of anaemic and bleeding patients
• Logical diagnostic testing- which test and why?
• Blood smears – digital images to develop your practical skills
• Bone marrow biopsies – practical session to show you how
• Blood and transfusion products – new developments
• Case-based examples to discuss and illustrate the management of common presentations
