Outline
Ophthalmic examination, diagnosis and decision-making can be very challenging in the practice situation! This course is for you if you are working with small animals in practice and you would like to improve your ophthalmic skills. During the four attendance sessions you will develop your confidence in dealing with ophthalmic patients, update your knowledge in this key area and develop your expertise in ophthalmic surgery.

Module 1: Date: 16th November 2007

This is a hands-on day of practical ophthalmic examination on dogs. During the day you will be taught a structured basic eye examination technique for use in first-opinion practice. You will also gain confidence in the use of your ophthalmoscope, and you will be able to apply your new skills directly on your return to the practice. You will also gain hands-on experience of more specialised techniques such as tonometry and slit-lamp examination; all under the direct guidance of highly experienced and approachable tutors.

Module 2: Date: 18th January 2008
Module 3: Date: 15th February 2008

These sessions build on the practical skills and measured approach to the ophthalmic patient that you have developed in module 1. They comprise a mix of seminars, case-based presentations, small group sessions and self-assessment quizzes.

During these interactive modules, you will learn about the diagnosis of the more common eye conditions seen in first opinion practice, and develop rational plans for treatment of these animals.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Conditions of the eyelids
• Canine and feline conjunctivitis
• Diseases of the cornea
• Treatment of 'indolent' corneal ulceration
• Management of corneal 'melts'
• Anterior uveitis
• Hyphaema
• Glaucoma
• The lens
• Retinal and optic nerve disease
• Sudden onset blindness
• Neuro-ophthalmic diseases

Module 4: Date: 28th March 2008

Building on your new skills and knowledge from the first three modules, Module 4 is a hands-on introduction to basic eyelid and ocular surface surgery. This is a highly practical day, and a large proportion of your time will be spent practising surgical techniques in wetlabs, under the guidance of the course tutors. The procedures that you will learn or refine are those that can be realistically be performed in all small animal practices.

Eyelid surgery:
• Temporary eversion sutures for entropion in puppies
• Techniques for entropion surgery
• Removal of eyelid masses
• Achieving primary closure of eyelid defects

Basic corneal surgery:
• Keratotomy for non-healing corneal ulcers
• Conjunctival pedicle graft

Throughout the course the emphasis will be on developing your ophthalmic examination, diagnostic and decision-making abilities and introducing you to the types of surgical procedures that you will be able to carry out in practice. The course will provide a safe and supportive environment for developing your new skills, and there will be the opportunity to discuss cases with the course tutor throughout.
