Course outline
Seizures are one of the most frequently encountered neurological conditions in first opinion practice and certainly the most distressing for the owner. While most dogs and cats present with ‘typical’ generalised seizures, others may present with a range of unusual seizure activity. Recognition of such ‘atypical’ presentations and differentiation with non-epileptic seizure events is a pre-requisite in the diagnostic approach. This module will provide you with the essential practical aspects of the neurological examination of epileptic patients, step-by-step diagnostic tests to consider and rational behind the use of anti-epileptic treatment.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Video tour of epileptic seizures and other paroxysmal disorders
• Practical diagnostic approach to the seizuring dog
• The when/how/what of anti-epileptic treatment
• Refractory seizures - what are the options?
• What differences should I consider with a seizuring cat?
• Tremors and twitches
