Course outline
During this module we will focus on GI disease and anaemia in cats. Major GI signs, particularly vomiting and diarrhoea, are a common presentation that you will see in practice. We will discuss a practical approach that you can follow for the investigation and management of these signs, using case histories as examples. New ideas on treatment will also be covered.
Anaemia is a particular problem in cats. Whilst anaemia is a common feature of many feline disorders, anaemia sometimes represents the main problem and is often severe at first presentation. You will learn a practical approach to investigating, diagnosing and treating anaemic cats that present in your consulting room, using extensive case examples.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Characterisation and identification of different types and causes of anaemia in cats
• Update on haemoplasmas – (agents responsible for feline infectious anaemia)
• Supportive treatment for anaemia including blood transfusion and importance of blood groups
• Investigation of chronic vomiting
• Investigation of chronic diarrhoea
• When to scope and when to do surgery
• Treatment of small and large bowel disease
• Case studies in feline gastroenterology
