Course outline
As a small animal practitioner, you need to be able to assess your emergency patients rapidly and accurately. Prompt and appropriate management of these patients is vital to obtain the best clinical outcome. During this module we will develop your existing knowledge and skills to help you to acquire a confident, practical approach towards your emergency patients. We will use interactive case discussions to consolidate and apply the theory that we cover in seminars during the day.

Specific areas to be covered:
• Approach to the emergency patient
• Respiratory distress – what to do, what equipment do you need?
• Fluid therapy – does it really matter what you use and how you give it?
• The essential minimum database; electrolytes, blood gas and acid - base analysis
• Approach to the acute abdomen- how to make the right decision
• Case based discussions
