Course outline
If you are in mixed practice and you rarely do farm work except out of hours with little back up, then this course is for you. It will also be useful for all veterinary surgeons with limited farm experience. It will give you a structured step by step approach to each problem with indications as to what to do, when to ask for help and when to be confident that the best course of action is to opt for euthanasia. You will be provided with lists of medicines, which should be available and extra equipment that will be needed for each emergency.
The course is specifically designed to cut down your stress levels on the way to the call. You will also gain confidence in dealing with farmers and remaining in control of the situation with your patients.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• The calving cow
• The downer cow
• The acutely ill cow, goat, sheep
• The parturient sheep or goat
• The pig case when the pig expert is not available
• The ten minute consult on Camelids
