Course outline
This two day course comprises a series of informal lectures followed by case orientated interactive discussions. Practical, up to date information will be provided that will help you with the assessment, initial investigation and management of emergency situations that are commonly and not so commonly encountered in general equine practice. You will learn how to assess and manage horses with colic; how to minimise stress and optimise the outcome with traumatic and complicated wounds, and develop confidence in coping with foaling and post-foaling emergencies.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Colic: Medical management, false colic and decision-making for surgery or referral
• Traumatic wounds in the field: Triage and field management
• Complicated wounds-investigation and initial management
• Potential fractures- field diagnosis and management
• The non-weight bearing horse and acute laminitis
• Management of the acutely recumbent horse
• Neurological emergencies: Respiratory distress: Ophthalmic emergencies
• The toxaemic horse
• The foaling mare: When not to panic!
• Post - foaling emergencies: Colic, haemorrhage, retained placenta
• The neonatal foal: when not to panic!
• The sick foal: Investigation and triage
