Course outline
Surgery is an interesting and dynamic field of veterinary medicine where you as a skilled nurse can play an important role. You will often be involved in surgical cases in daily practice, participating in anything from assessment to postoperative care. A good understanding of the basic principles and the practical skills needed to perform surgery can be very rewarding both for you personally and for your practice.

This course will provide you with a good background of basic surgical principles and treatment of surgical patients, both pre and postoperatively. Practical techniques and tips to develop your surgical skills will be a major part of the course, with hands on practical sessions to allow you to practise your suturing techniques and surgical skills. At the end of the course you’ll be looking forward to scrubbing in!

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Preoperative assessment of patients
o dealing with the needs of different types of cases
• Principles of surgery – those dreaded Halstead Principles!
• Intraoperative assessment including haemostasis techniques
• Basic surgical skills – instruments and suture techniques (including non-suture closures)
• Practical sessions allow you to practise your suturing and instrument handling skills with your tutor.
