Course outline
Dealing with severely ill, injured or unstable patients can be an enormously rewarding experience and presents an ideal opportunity to exercise your nursing skills in all areas. This course will provide an in-depth and highly practical view of critical patient nursing, from how to carry out a basic physical assessment through to advanced monitoring techniques.
You will learn about essential nutritional support, fluid and electrolyte therapy, pain management and other topics essential for the best management for your patients. Cases will be used to illustrate many of the underlying principles of effective intensive care nursing and to relate learning to the types of cases that you see in practice. This course will equip you with the skills that you need to nurse critical patients effectively and with minimal stress, to achieve optimum outcomes for the patient, owner and practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Physical assessment of your critical patients
• Decision-making in fluid therapy; what, when and how much?
