Course outline
Exotic animals are becoming increasingly popular as pets and are presented frequently in practice. Owners of these animals expect a high level of care and understanding from their veterinary team. Are you confident that you understand the vital implications of correct husbandry for exotics and how to provide appropriate intensive care when they are admitted to your practice? If you feel that there are gaps in your knowledge and experience of nursing and treating exotic animals, then this is the course for you.
During the course you will increase your confidence in dealing with exotic patients, improve your knowledge of their husbandry and develop your expertise in exotic animal nursing and intensive care. This will increase your confidence in dealing with clients on the phone and in the waiting room, so that they feel relaxed about leaving their exotic pet in your care.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Basic husbandry, nutrition and captive care of birds and reptiles
• Dealing with and recognising emergencies in exotic animals
• Methods of transport, handling techniques, hospitalisation and critical care
• Anaesthesia
• Radiography
• Laboratory procedures
• Case discussions relating theory to
the patients you see in practice
