Course outline
Assessing cells under the microscope gives a snapshot into many disease processes, allowing subsequent focused diagnostic investigations. As a nurse working in practice, you are integral to practice microscopy. You may be responsible for ‘in house’ haematology, and perhaps you are also involved in cytology, from preparation of the sample, to handling and examination of cells harvested.
This course will briefly review basic principles, and then concentrate on two vital areas of diagnostic investigation – haematology and cytology. This will give you the confidence to critically evaluate samples and so help guide further investigations for your patients in practice. The haematology will include essential theory accompanied by illustrative colour photos. The cytology will range from inflammation and tissue response to neoplasia. Both areas include ‘hands-on’ sessions and case examples to maximise your practical experience and learning.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• How to set up your microscope
• Sample preparation and blood film evaluation
• Skin scrapes and impression smears
• Anaemia
• Inflammation and infection
• Leukaemia
• Introductory neoplasia
