Course outline
The appreciation of the significance of cardiac disease has increased in recent years. You probably identify cardiac murmurs, arrhythmias and gallop sounds in many of your feline patients. This gives rise to dilemmas over whether you should investigate in each case and if so how to investigate. Once your investigation is complete, should you instigate treatment and if so what is the best therapeutic plan?
This course will provide you with the tools you need to decide when and how to investigate your feline cardiac patients. You will learn which current treatment options are recommended for specific conditions. Management will be discussed with reference to clinical case examples that you are likely to encounter in practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Historical features to help you identify cats with cardiac disease
• Physical examination- what you should be looking for
• Further investigations to select, including
o ECGs / Thoracic radiography / Echocardiography
o Blood pressure measurement
o Clincial pathology
• Current treatment options- which should you select?
• Primary and secondary acquired diseases and congenital conditions, the dyspnoeic cat, screening issues in breeding cats, asymptomatic cats
