Course outline
Anaemia and bleeding disorders are common presentations in small animal practice and logical decision making is essential to reach a diagnosis and institute appropriate treatment. How do you decide if anaemia is regenerative or non-regenerative? When should you take a bone marrow biopsy and how should you carry it out? What is the most appropriate way of investigating a patient with a bleeding tendency? When is a blood transfusion appropriate and what precautions do you need to take?
This course will provide you with the knowledge to answer these questions with your patients. The emphasis will be on a practical approach to common problems, with lots of case-based discussions and advice on management of diseases that you will see frequently in practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Investigation of anaemic patients – common causes and logical diagnostic testing
• Investigation of bleeding patients – what diseases are you looking for and how do you test for them?
• Blood smears – what can they show you?
• Bone marrow biopsies – when and how?
• Update on immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia
• Effective and practical use of blood and blood products in general practice
