Course outline
Critical care involves many disciplines – you need to be an anaesthetist, surgeon, medic, neurologist and cardiologist to name but a few, often in the space of 24 hours! Dealing with the severely ill, injured or unstable patient can be a hectic but rewarding experience.
This course will provide you with an in-depth view of critical patient assessment and management, including pathophysiological principles and their application. We will look at the use and abuse of monitoring and ancillary equipment, together with your management options for common complications such as respiratory distress, seizures, arrhythmias, oliguria and electrolyte disturbances. Important differences between cats and dogs that you need to be aware of in critical care will also be discussed. Cases that you are likely to encounter in practice will be used to illustrate these areas.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Shock: pathophysiology, recognition and management
• Sedation, anaesthesia and analgesia in critical patients
• Laboratory evaluation of the critically ill patient
• How to deal with acid-base and electrolyte disorders
• Patient monitoring and complications
