As a small animal practitioner, you need to be able to assess your emergency patients rapidly and accurately. Prompt and appropriate management of these patients is vital to obtain the best clinical outcome. During this module we will develop your existing knowledge and skills to help you to acquire a confident, practical approach towards your emergency patients. We will use interactive case discussions to consolidate and apply the theory that we cover in seminars during the day.

Eye conditions are challenging enough when you don’t feel that confident in dealing with them. But ocular emergencies can be a real nightmare, be they perforating corneas, inflamed irises, luxated lenses or detached retinas. During this module we will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of urgent ophthalmic presentations both medical and surgical. Throughout the session we will develop your existing skills, with a particular emphasis on the practical steps that you can realistically take where referral is not an option.
Specific areas to be covered:
• Use of cadaver eyes and tissues in highly practical wetlab sessions
• Corneal ulcers- particularly performing conjunctival pedicle grafts
• Corneal foreign bodies- tips and techniques for safe removal
• Prolapsed globes- how to salvage and replace
• Lens luxation - dealing with them when referral is not geographically or financially possible

Bleeding disorders and anaemia are common presentations in small animal practice, and logical decision making is essential to help you to reach a diagnosis and then provide the appropriate treatment. Is the anaemia regenerative or non-regenerative? When and how would you take a bone biopsy? Bleeding tendencies – how should you investigate? When do you need to use a blood transfusion, and how do you calculate the transfusion rate? What precautions do you need to take?
We will answer all these questions and more during this session. The emphasis will be on a practical approach that you can use for common problems, with plenty of case-based discussion and advice on the management of diseases that you will frequently see in general practice.

• Investigation of anaemic and bleeding patients
• Logical diagnostic testing- which test and why?
• Blood smears – digital images to develop your practical skills
• Bone marrow biopsies – practical session to show you how
