Course outline
Are you new to ultrasound scanning? Do you want to develop this important skill so that you can use ultrasound effectively for the benefit of your small animal patients? This two day practical workshop will provide an excellent introduction for you and give you essential theory combined with practical experience of scanning.
If you have a little experience of scanning and wish to develop your confidence you will also find this course very helpful. On the first day, you will learn the basics of abdominal ultrasound, including patient preparation and techniques for examination of abdominal organs. On day two thoracic ultrasound will be introduced.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Choosing and using ultrasound machines and probes - what should you buy?
• Common artefacts that you may encounter
• Ultrasound of the liver, spleen, urinary and genital tracts
• How to recognise commonly encountered conditions
• A standard protocol for examination of the heart
• Basic parameters of cardiac disease and how to assess them, including wall thickness, chamber dimensions and fractional shortening
