Course outline
This course will introduce you to the principles of echocardiography and give a “user’s guide” to getting started with the technique in your practice. Ultrasound physics will be discussed to help you understand how good quality images are produced. A step by step run through of the selection of ultrasound machines and transducers suitable for echocardiography and the settings of an ultrasound machine needed for echocardiography will be provided. Storage and display of images will also be discussed.
The practical session will allow you to learn how to get the views required for two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography. Handson scanning sessions in small groups provide the opportunity to practise with help from specialised tutors.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Choosing suitable ultrasound equiptment
• Obtaining high quality echocardiograms
• Different planes for the best images
• Measurement of echoes - what is significant?
• Imaging artifects
• Pitfalls of echocardiography and how to avoid them
