Course outline
As a veterinary nurse, you will encounter a variety of orthopaedic cases in the course of your work. Knowledge of how best to care for these patients both before and after surgery can significantly improve the outcome for individual animals. During this course you will develop your understanding of orthopaedic instrumentation and your confidence in assisting in theatre and maintaining the equipment. Your patients may be referred to specialist centres for specific surgical procedures such as spinal surgery, total hip replacement and tibial plateau leveling oesteotomy surgery. Your clients will seek help from you and this course will help you to provide appropriate advice. You may also be involved with dressing changes that include casts and splints; are you confident that you can manage these effectively and avoid complications?
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Care of your orthopaedic patients from admission to surgery
• Pre-operative preparation of the patient
• Orthopaedic instrumentation and theatre practice
• Tailored care for specific surgical procedures

• Post-operative patient care
• Client instructions and take home care
