Course outline
When you are presented with a wound you cannot treat it in isolationit will be attached to a small animal patient! Many wounds, especially traumatic ones, are coupled with a critical patient and a traumatised client. Decision making for management can revert to those ‘old favourites’ with little consideration of new skills and techniques that may provide better outcomes in these patients. This course is specifically designed to enhance your role as a veterinary nurse in wound management. During the day you will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills that you need for a confident approach to the management of wounds in association with the veterinary surgeon. We will introduce advanced principles of wound management and technical guidance giving you the necessary skills to adopt a pro-active and effective plan when faced with both routine and challenging cases.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Wound types and objectives
• Wound assessment and objective setting
• ‘Advanced’ wound management principles: delayed primary union and second intent healing
• Delayed healing and chronic wounds
• Developing the nurses’ role in practice
• Dressing selection and application
• Evidence versus experience
