Course outline
As a veterinary nurse you play a key role in the care of pregnant animals, giving advice about normal parturition and of course the options that arise if the birth does not progress normally. During this course we will discuss the non-surgical and surgical options, including your role in Caesarean sections assisting with both surgical setup, revival of puppies and post-operative care of the bitch. The course will also cover normal neonatal development and physiology which is very different from the adult or even the three month old puppy. We will discuss neonatal emergencies and how to deal with them effectively, causes of neonatal death and tips for nursing young puppies.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• The pregnant bitch and advice during normal birth
• When is it no longer a normal birth?
• When to act and when to wait
• Non-surgical intervention during birth
• Setting up for and assisting in a Caesarean section
• Recovery of the bitch and revival of puppies at birth
• Care of neonates when brought into the surgery
• Normal neonatal development
