Course outline
Most hospitalised patients undergoing procedures in veterinary practice will experience what we recognise as pain at some point during their stay. Pain associated with tissue damage offers no
benefits and can significantly delay post-operative progress. As a veterinary nurse you are at the “sharp end” of patient care and you are ideally placed to recognise the signs of acute and chronic pain in small animals and take steps to manage that pain. This course will focus on the practical aspects of how to recognise pain and how to assess and manage pain. We will use clinical case material to illustrate and discuss important points and provide you with guidelines that you can follow in your practice.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Pain physiology – what you need to know
• Recognising pain – signs and species differences
• Drugs for acute pain - what to give, when to give it and how
• Local analgesia – not just for dentists!
• Multimodal analgesia
• Recognising and treating chronic pain in small animals
