Course outline
How do your surgical skills measure up? Do you have the skills to treat those patients with minor lacerations, remove a small lump, or play an active role in the surgical management of critical cases? Surgery is an interesting and dynamic field of veterinary medicine, where a skilled
nurse can and should play an important role. Having a good understanding of the basic principles and the practical skills needed to perform surgery can be very rewarding personally and for your practice. Following a discussion on Schedule 3 and its application to daily practice, this course will provide you with a good background of basic surgical principles and treatment of surgical patients, both pre and postoperatively. Practical techniques and tips to improve your surgical skills will be part of the course, with hands on practical sessions to improve your suturing techniques and surgical skills. You’ll be looking forward to scrubbing in!
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Schedule 3 legislation discussion
• Preoperative assessment of patients including dealing with the needs of different types of cases
• Principles of surgery – those dreaded Halstead Principles!
• Intraoperative assessment with hemostasis techniques and bleeding management
• Basic surgical skills – instruments and suture techniques
• A chance to practice your suturing and instrument handling skills in a practical setting with
your tutor
