Course outline
The surgeon plays a vital role in the treatment of cancer. For many different types of cancer, the operative removal of a tumour is the most successful therapy and is most likely to effect a cure.
But how do you decide which tumours are suitable for surgical treatment, how extensive the surgery should be and whether any additional therapies should be included? On this course you will gain knowledge and skills that will enable you to make appropriate decisions based on the tumour type and location and the wishes of the owner. We will discuss surgical oncology patients that you are likely to encounter in your practice, evaluate common diagnostic procedures and go through effective surgical treatments.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Principles of surgical oncology
• How to take diagnostic biopsies
• Skin tumours including mast cell tumours
• Bone tumours in the dog and cat- your treatment options
• Dealing with tumours of the abdominal cavity
