Course outline
Gastrointestinal surgery skills are essential for all vets working with small animals. You need to have a plan before starting these procedures and be confident that you can cope with what you find once you have performed your laparotomy. This course will enhance your decision making and practical skills in key areas of gastrointestinal surgery and relevant supportive care.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Exploratory laparotomy
• Principles of intestinal surgery
• Oesophageal disease
• Gastric dilatation-volvulus
• Biopsy procedures
• Feeding tube techniques: oesophagostomy, gastrostomy
• Gastropexy techniques
• Abdominocentesis
• Diagnostic peritoneal lavage
