Course outline
How “exotic” is your exotics caseload really? You’re confident with good old rabbits, reptiles and ring-necked parakeets, but what about a redknee tarantula, not to mention skunks, pet wallabies or axolotls? There are an increasing number of unusual exotic species being kept as pets, and more and more people are starting to keep them in the UK. Are you ready to deal with these more unusual veterinary patients when they present themselves in your clinic? This introductory course will cover a wide variety of more unorthodox exotic pets, including pet primates, such as marmosets, tamarins and lemurs; other unusual pet mammals, including armadillos, skunks, and sugar gliders; interesting invertebrates such as giant land snails, tarantulas, and scorpions; and some less commonly seen amphibians. No matter how long you have been doing exotic pet medicine you are sure to learn something new on this course and pick up some useful practical tips.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Husbandry and nutritional requirements
• Safe handling techniques and restraint
• Clinically relevant anatomy and physiology
• Behaviour and training problems
• Common medical conditions, their diagnosis and treatment
• Hospitalisation and nursing care
• Practical anaesthesia
• Basic surgical considerations and techniques
