Course outline
Rodents such as guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils can be a challenge to deal with in practice. These patients are small and sometimes difficult to handle. They are also easily stressed (and this may also apply to the owner). Financial constraints commonly apply and need to be considered carefully as you decide on the best treatment plan. Selection and interpretation of diagnostic tests also varies widely from what you may be used to with your canine and feline patients. Ferrets, although similar to cats and dogs in many respects, have significant differences in the diseases to which they are susceptible. At the end of this course you will have acquired the knowledge to deal confidently and effectively with these species.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• The basics of anatomy, physiology and husbandry
• Handling, nursing and supportive care
• How to perform diagnostic tests, including diagnostic imaging
• Diagnosis and treatment of common infectious and noninfectious diseases
• Anaesthesia and analgesia - common surgical techniques
• Case based sessions apply theory to practice
