Course outline
Effective ophthalmic examination of small animal patients has long been a slightly dark art for many in practice. With a complex array of instruments available and different techniques advocated by ophthalmologists, how do we accurately diagnose the clinical conditions that present to us as general practitioners? This is a ‘hands-on’ introductory course to the clinical ophthalmic examination. You will have the opportunity to see, handle and play with all of the standard ophthalmic instruments, from the simplest pen torches up to and including slit lamp biomicroscopes, head worn video indirect ophthalmoscopes and applanation tonometers. After a mixture of lectures and practical demonstrations by the course tutors you will practise the clinical techniques you have learnt on live patients. At the end of the course you will be well equipped to carry out effective ophthalmic examinations on all of your small animal patients using the equipment that you have available in your practice.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Correct sequence to performing a complete ophthalmic examination
• How a direct ophthalmoscope works
• Practical tips for indirect ophthalmoscopy
• What is tonometry and how is it done?
