Course outline
Working in small animal practice you will encounter ophthalmological cases on a regular basis. The clinical signs that are present may be due to primary ocular disease or they may represent manifestations of systemic disorders. In the consulting room it can be all too easy to prescribe empirical treatments without fully considering the possible differential diagnoses. During this course we will develop a logical approach to the investigation and management of common clinical ophthalmic conditions through a series of case presentations and discussions. At the end of the day you will be able to apply a systematic approach to the management of ocular disease in your small animal patients, and increase both your professional satisfaction and your success rate when dealing with more challenging cases.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Ocular anatomy and physiology- what you need to know
• How to carry out an ocular examination in practice
• Investigation and management of eyelid disorders
• Approach to the “red eye”
• Approach to the “blue eye”
• Approach to the “purulent/discharging eye”
• Investigation and management of the “bulging eye”
• Investigation and management of the “watery eye”
• Vision loss- how to deal with it
• When to consider referral
