Course outline
Referral to an ophthalmology specialist is not always an option in practice, so how do you manage those cases that require surgical intervention but which you are not able to refer? This is a ‘hands-on’ introduction to basic eyelid and ocular surface surgery, which will guide you through surgical decision making and practical surgical techniques for commonly presented eye conditions in small animal practice. After a mix of lectures and practical demonstrations from the course tutor, you will practise the surgical techniques you have learned on cadavers. There will also be the opportunity to purchase ophthalmic instruments at substantial discounts on this course.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Eyelid surgery:
o Temporary eversion sutures for entropion in puppies
o Techniques for entropion surgery
o Removal of eyelid masses
o Achieving primary closure of eyelid defects
• Basic corneal surgery:
o Keratotomy for non-healing corneal ulcers
o Conjunctival pedicle grafts
