Course outline
This course will help you to gain confidence and practical skills in the ocular examination of horses and donkeys. Lectures are combined with extensive hands-on examination sessions so that you can apply theory to practice under the guidance of the tutor. We will cover ophthalmic presentations commonly encountered in equine patients, including detailed discussion on the diagnostic, prognostic and management dilemmas that you will encounter in equine cataract, uveitis and squamous cell carcinoma. The extensive practical sessions will enable you to gain invaluable experience in the use of a range of ophthalmic equipment, from the basic direct ophthalmoscope to the indirect ophthalmoscope and slit lamp biomicroscopes. We will also look at ancilliary tools such as tonometers and ocular ultrasonography.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Practical examination of the equine eye
• What to look for on prepurchase examination
• Assessment of equine cataracts - particularly prognostic factors
• Evaluation of the equine retina - what's normal and abnormal?
• Equine adnexal neoplasia - diagnosis and treatment
