Course outline
Do you ever struggle with backyard farm animals or pet chickens that you are expected to see but know little about? This course is for you if you are in mixed practice, if you are a new graduate or if you are in small animal practice and find that owners want you to treat their pet poultry and farm animals. The two tutors have experience of the veterinary aspects of small scale farming enterprises and also of keeping farm animals and poultry themselves. The day will be interactive, with informal lectures and plenty of time for you to ask questions. We will discuss the approach to problems that you are likely to encounter in practice and find solutions which suit the animals, the clients and ourselves. At the end of the day you should feel happy that you can give common backyard problems your best shot.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Common diseases of backyard chickens
• Common conditions of guinea fowl, ducks, geese and game birds
• Treatment and worming of backyard poultry
• Euthanasia and post mortem of backyard birds
• Skin disease in goats
• Common surgical procedures in farm animals
• Medical challenges in backyard sheep and pigs
