Course outline
Appropriate and effective physiotherapy can play a vital role in improving outcomes in your trauma and surgical patients, yet its application remains speculative and underused. As a vet in first opinion practice, you may be required to make decisions about physiotherapy and rehabilitation without sufficient understanding of the process, techniques and benefits for your patients.

This course provides essential theory and shows you basic physiotherapy techniques that can be incorporated into your practice straight away. You will carry out massage, passive movements and stretches on dogs and learn when it is appropriate to use hot and cold therapy, the value of hydrotherapy and some simple but useful therapeutic exercises. We will work through case studies where you can use your newfound knowledge to plan appropriate postoperative
physiotherapeutic care for each patient.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Introduction to Physiotherapy:
o What is it, and what does it involve?
o Roles, responsibilities, and relationships
o Physiotherapy treatment modalities
• What to use and when; indications and contraindications for specific techniques
• Introduction to therapeutic exercise:
o Strength, suppleness, stamina, proprioception
o Hydrotherapy
• Integrating physiotherapy into your small animal practice
o What can you do and what are the benefits to your patients and practice?
