Course outline
Are you controlling pain in your small animal patients effectively? Most hospitalised patients undergoing procedures in your practice will experience what we recognise as pain at some point during their stay. As well as being ethically and morally unacceptable, pain associated with tissue damage offers no clinical benefits and can significantly delay post-operative progress, impairing respiratory function, preventing adequate nutrition and restricting early patient mobilisation. Effective pain management is therefore an essential part of good patient care in your practice.
During this course we will focus on the practical aspects of pain recognition, assessment and management, using clinical case material where appropriate to illustrate important points.

Specific areas to be covered include:
• Pain physiology – the essentials
• Recognising pain – just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there!
• Opioids and NSAIDs– what to use and when
• Local & regional analgesia – where and when
• Multiple drug infusions for pain control
• Recognising and treating chronic pain in small animals

You are welcome to bring case material or discuss your own practice policies.
