Course outline
Behavioural issues in small animals play an important role in general practice. This course will increase your knowledge of key behavioural factors that can decrease stress for your patients, their owners and the staff in your practice. We will use the basic principles of natural species specific behaviours and learning theory to explain how behavioural issues arise within a veterinary context and how you can deal with them effectively. We will discuss the principle of understanding the motivation for behaviour rather than simply considering symptoms and we will consider the role of medication and pheromone therapy in the management of behavioural cases.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Basic principles of normal species specific behaviour
• Considering how animals learn
• Early detection of behavioural cases
• Understanding motivation
• Considering the interplay between behaviour and disease
• When and how to refer
• Deciding on appropriate medication for behavioural cases
• Understanding pheromone therapy
