Course outline
Effective and targeted laboratory work-up is essential for accurate diagnosis in many small animal patients. Case management and monitoring may also depend to a significant extent on laboratory examination of clinical samples. This workshop will focus on haematology, from taking and preparing samples to how to interpret blood films, and the uses and potential limitations of haematological analysers. Abnormalities of red and white blood cell profiles will be discussed in detail and related to the disease processes that you will need to consider in each case. A hands-on microscopy session provides the opportunity for you to apply your newly gained knowledge in a practical setting.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Practising good haematology- making and assessing blood films
• Investigation of Anaemia; blood loss; haemolytic; non-regenerative
• Abnormalities of white blood cell profiles: Leucocytosis and leucopaenia; neutrophilia and neutropaenia; leukaemia
• Practical microscopy sessions translates theory into practise
