Course outline
Gastroenterology patients probably form a large part of your caseload in small animal practice. They can present as acute life threatening cases demanding immediate and effective diagnosis and treatment, through to chronic cases where you can make a more leisurely diagnosis. During this course we will use clinical case studies to develop a logical approach to the diagnosis of both acute and chronic cases. We will also discuss how to interpret the results of tests, and we will look at treatment regimes that are currently available. In particular we will go through the interpretation of blood reports, and findings in both radiographic and ultrasound imaging that you can use to help reach a diagnosis. Interpretation of gross endoscopic abnormalities and histopathology reports will also be discussed.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• How to interpret blood results for the gut, liver and pancreatic assessment
• Interpretation of radiographs, contrast studies and ultrasound
• Interpretation of gross endoscopic findings and histopathology
• Treatment protocols; options and effectiveness
• Treatment regimes for liver disease, pancreatitis, EPI, IBD and ARD
