Course outline
Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrinopathy in cats and dogs. Diagnosis is usually straightforward, but you may sometimes find management of these patients challenging.
On this course you will optimise your approach to your feline and canine diabetic patients, and make sure that you are up to date with recent advances in the management and monitoring of this chronic condition. This will form the basis for tackling your problem patients who never seem to stabilise, and also those that destabilise following a period of good diabetic control. The case-based format and interactive discussion sessions will help you to apply theory to scenarios that are likely to take place in your consulting room. At the end of the day you will be well equipped to approach your problem diabetics and those with other endocrinopathies, with renewed enthusiasm and confidence.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus.
• Ketoacidosis
• The "Somogyi" phenomenon and how to deal with it
• Insulin resistance associated with concurrent endocrinopathies
• Tips on how to resolve those difficult cases
• Other tricky endocrine cases will also be introduced and investigated during the day
