Course outline
Anaemia and bleeding disorders are common presentations in dogsand cats in first opinion practice. These patients require a logicalapproach to reach an accurate diagnosis and decide on appropriate management. For instance, how do you distinguish between a regenerative and non regenerative anaemia? What is the optimaltreatment for your canine patient with immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia? What do you do if you suspect a bleeding disorder? When is a blood transfusion necessary and how should it be administered? During this course we will address these practical questions with emphasis on a structured approach to case investigation that you can use in all of your patients. We will use a wide selection of casebased examples to discuss and illustrate the management of common presentations.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• How to approach the anaemic patient
• Distinguishing regenerative from non-regenerative anaemia
• Causes and treatment of regenerative and non-regenerative anaemia
• Top tips for successful bone marrow sampling
• Investigation of the bleeding patient- common causes, diagnosis and treatment
