Course outline
This course will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that you need to confidently manage some of the more common medical emergencies that you will encounter in
practice. We will develop your decision-making skills as we work through clinical case examples. The “hands-on” practical component in this session will enable you to practise essential techniques in a relaxed learning environment.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• How should you treat the diabetic ketoacidotic patient?
• How to identify and treat the dog with hypoadrenocorticism
• Managing patients with urinary tract obstruction for best results
• The best approach for patients with acute or chronic renal failure
• Working up a case of hypercalcaemia to reach a diagnosis
• Enteral nutrition- why, when and how?
• How to perform pericardiocentesis safely and effectively
The practical sessions will incorporate:
• Placement of oesophagostomy tubes
• Placement of jugular catheters
