Course outline
'There are no safe anaesthetics, only safe anaesthetists!’ This course will help you to manage the daily anaesthetic dramas that you are likely to encounter in small animal practice. We will
troubleshoot real anaesthetic problems and cover recent advances in anaesthetic drugs and equipment, together with effective pain management. Case discussions will be used to augment lectures and will include analgesia, trauma and emergency patient anaesthetic care and frequently encountered challenging patients such as cardiovascular and respiratory cases. By applying cutting edge theory to actual cases, you will develop strategies for dealing with your own small animal anaesthetic challenges.
Specific areas to be covered include:
• Basic monitoring and anaesthetic principles
• Respiratory problems and diagnostics
• Cardiovascular problems
• Anaesthesia for abdominal surgery
• Safe anaesthesia for trauma and emergency surgeries
• Analgesia, including the use of local nerve blocks
• Sedation techniques
• Recovery from surgery
